This is an old student work that so many people still love. It is an acrylic painting that I pulled an all nighter to finish back in 93'. The figure was drawn from a clothed model and she was wearing a heart charm around her neck. When I sketched the model I drew vines all over the figure right away, just a spontaneous thought. I didn't know what I was painting at the time, but the title just hit me. It actually frightened me. And it was greatly in response to my then ex-girlfriend, her drug problem and that I was addicted to her memory even though she turned my world upside down. It was the first time I painted vines which are still a very big motif in my art. I recently began several oil painting versions of this, still trying to create beauty from a bad memory...BTW I got over her a long time ago.
I just got it professionally photographed and plan on making prints, only took me 14 years and the fact that it's my most popular painting.
It does strike a rather disconcerting subconscious chord. I just can't "figure it out", which, I suppose, is what disturbs me, and at the same time that's attracts me to it.
The painting itself is addictive...
Great work.
LOL.. I myself sometimes have issues with titles on my work. I think the title fits this piece because and yes here i go the vines make this piece look like she is struggling or being trapped in something. Addiction, turmoil or whatever else comes along in a persons life. Ok enough psychology. Again i love the use of color in this. It has a a very psychedellic feel to it. It almost reminds me of a scuse the lack of better wording but a "blacklight" poster.
The piece is very interesting to look at and holds a persons attention. Nicely done. If i were you i would print this one.

It might look like I'm doing nothing, but at the cellular level I'm actually quite busy...
I spent about 10 years trying to escape this painting and the image but now I find myself going right back to it. During a gallery show I had in December I showed 12 pieces and it was one of the favorites. I was a little disapointed that people weren't drawn to my new stuff but then the new stuff was about trying to perfect technique and glazing methods and lacked a human form. I was in Coasta Rica 3 months ago and showed my portfolio around and this was a favorite and I didn't even know the correct translation for the title, it didn't matter I guess. And the DA people seem to like it more then the rest of my stuff so I hope to just improve upon the original image.
Ahh dont take it to heart that some of your older work is a favorite over your newer stuff. Ive had that issue as well with some of my pieces. A few actually that i was really excited about and just impressed myself with didnt have that response with everyone else, and then vice versa pieces thati do that im not overly impressed with or put much thought into someone just loves andraves about. Im finding that quite common with some of my work actually for whatever reason. Some of my new stuff is trying to work on technique as well or at least technique for me anyways. Either way your work is very impressive old or new, I just happened to pick out a few of my favorites because they are very eye catching with the colors. Keep it up.
